Scalia Group
The Scalia Group counts its productions in one of the most important Italian production sites: Marina di Acate, in the province of Ragusa. The greenhouse crops, 10 hectares in high-tech structures, are located near the sea, from which they take the main essences, such as sandy soil and brackish irrigation waters, in addition to the sea breeze, here always mild, which brings with it precious elements .
The company established by the brothers Gaetano and Emanuele Scalia about 30 years ago can count on an accurate management of the climate, diversified according to the needs even within the same greenhouse. To obtain a production that is homogeneous in taste and appearance and, of course, of high quality, an extreme accuracy of details is required. The management of fertigation in the greenhouses of the Scalia Group, with irrigation water having 3000 – 5000 microsiemens of conductivity, is a real art that must be mastered.
Here the production is based on table tomatoes divided into three different segments: cherry, midi – plum and smooth round. All varieties are valuable and modern and do not require treatments, other than the essential ones and which remain below the legal requirements. The company is progressively moving towards the zero residue. Here sustainability is at home with the use of beneficial insects, photovoltaic panels, water saving and every possible precaution not to erode the soil.
The average yield per square meter in this company is around eight kg. A productivity that is not exactly generous, one might think of an impact. The soil and climatic conditions in which the company operates have the limit of a yield that is not excellent, but on the other hand the product is very sweet, tasty, bright red in color and has an exceptional post-harvest seal.
